Know the breath without changing it

Let noticing be enough for one ordinary moment.

Foundation editorial draft · Updated 2026-10-18

Why this is here

This is an original, introductory reflection on the opening instructions in MN 118. It does not reproduce a translation or replace Buddhist study and practice contexts.

An original introduction

A breath can be noticed before it becomes a project. Rather than making it deeper, slower, or more spiritual, see whether you can recognize its present character. The return is modest: knowing that a breath is happening, and beginning again when attention leaves.

Carry this today

At one transition today, notice a single natural breath without trying to improve it.

2 minutes · introductory · Original reflection informed by the discourse’s opening attention to long and short breathing; no translation is quoted.
