Notice the natural breath
A five-minute, non-forceful introduction to noticing breathing.
Foundation editorial draft · Updated 2026-10-18
When to try it
When a simple physical anchor feels welcome and you do not need to force calm or concentration.
Five minutes
Choose a stable position and let the breath happen without adjusting it.
Notice whether the breath feels long or short, using plain words only if that helps.
Feel one ordinary place where breathing is noticeable, such as the chest, belly, or nostrils.
When attention wanders, return to the next natural breath without correcting yourself.
End by noticing the room and choosing your next activity at an ordinary pace.
What not to expect
Controlled breathing, a special state, or the completion of the full sixteen-step practice described in MN 118.
Make it workable
Keep your eyes open, shorten the practice, or shift attention to sound or contact with the ground if breathing becomes uncomfortable. Stop if you feel dizzy, anxious, or short of breath.
