Begin again

Approach the familiar without deciding in advance what it must be.

Why this is here

This original reflection offers a question to take to Suzuki’s book. It is not a substitute for reading his talks in their Zen context.

An original introduction

Choose something familiar, such as making tea or sitting down. Notice how quickly you assume you already know the experience. Give one moment to what is actually here: temperature, contact, sound. Beginning again can be an ordinary adjustment of attention rather than a dramatic restart of your life.

Carry this today

Meet one familiar activity as something you have not quite finished noticing.

3 minutes · introductory · Original reflection on the book’s introductory theme; no edition-specific passage is quoted.
