Gentle self-inquiry
Turn toward the sense of I without demanding an answer.
Foundation editorial draft · Updated 2026-10-16
When to try it
When curiosity about the sense of self feels welcome and you have a quiet, supported moment.
Five minutes
Feel the support of the chair or ground. Let your eyes remain open if that helps you feel oriented.
Notice a thought and gently ask to whom it appears. Allow the ordinary answer to me without judging it.
Be curious about that me. Notice the sensations, images, or words present without settling on a definition.
Let the question become quiet. Do not force repetition or seek an unusual state; feel your feet if you become tense.
Stop asking, look around, and return to your next activity. No conclusion is needed.
What not to expect
An immediate answer, the disappearance of thoughts, or a certificate of spiritual attainment.
Make it workable
Use sound or contact with the ground instead of inward questioning if that feels more comfortable. Stop whenever you choose.
