Read one paragraph carefully

Distinguish the author’s claim, your experience, and your questions.

Foundation editorial draft · Updated 2026-10-16

When to try it

When philosophical language interests you or different traditions appear to make conflicting claims.

Five minutes

  1. 60 seconds

Choose one paragraph from a source you can legally access. Note its author and edition.

  2. 60 seconds

Read it once for its ordinary meaning. Look up one unfamiliar term if needed.

  3. 60 seconds

Read again and state its central claim in your own words.

  4. 60 seconds

Separate what the author says from what you have directly noticed and what you have only inferred.

  5. 60 seconds

Write one question to revisit. Close the text without demanding agreement.

What not to expect

Mastery of a tradition in one sitting or proof of a metaphysical claim from a brief exercise.

Make it workable

Use an accessible audio passage or a read-aloud tool. Pause rather than gathering many more sources.
